ABOUT MANGA/ANIME~

MANGA

  •  pronounced “MAHN-gah”
  • the term manga was coined in 1814 by Hokusai, who is best known for his woodblock print, “The Wave”
  • “manga” written in kanji uses the characters “man” (involuntary) and “ga” (sketches), so manga basically means “involuntary/whimsical sketches”… in other words, cartoons.
  • Weekly Shonen Magazine was the first weekly magazine for children in Japan. It started in 1959.
    • Manga is a Japanese word that means “cartoons” or “comics”.
    • Mangas are read backwards for a North American, from right to left.
    • In the early 60s, mangas for girls were mostly mad by man authors. It all changes in the mid 60s with woman artists making their first creations.
    • Each resident of Japan spends around $30 US for mangas each year.

ANIME

  • pronounced “AH-nee-may”
  • the word “anime” is actually short for the English word “animation”
  • in Japan, “anime” can refer to any kind of animation at all, and people even call Disney movies “anime” there, but in pretty much of the rest of the world, “anime” is strictly reserved to Japanese animation
  • anime can be used in commercials and different kinds of media other than TV shows, like how we think of anime here
  • can completely hand-drawn or have CG effects (an example would be LASTEXILE)

PUBLICATION OF MANGA

  • manga are first published in special manga magazines, then in tankoubon form, which are basically trade paperbacks (when you go to the bookstore, the little manga books you buy are tankoubon)

  • Doujinshi are manga produced by small amateur publishers outside the mainstream commercial market
  • can be like fanfictions are here, where you use characters from already-created series and make up new storylines for them or continue an already-existing storyline
  • can be a parody on something
  • can be a completely original idea! ^^ (this is how CLAMP got famous)
